Jonathan Deer

Jonathan M. Deer is a seasoned litigator and business attorney with more than 30 years of experience guiding clients through high-stakes disputes and complex transactions. Recognized as both a Legal Visionary and one of the Leaders of Influence: Litigators & Trial Attorneys by the Los Angeles Times Business Journal, Jonathan is known for his ability to deliver practical solutions while vigorously advocating for his clients in court.

Jonathan brings a rare dual perspective: he is equally skilled in transactional matters and litigation. He has tried cases before state and federal courts, arbitrations, and mediations, while also structuring multimillion-dollar real estate and business deals.

Litigation Experience

Jonathan has successfully handled disputes involving real estate, business, insurance, contracts, partnerships, intellectual property, and fraud. His accomplishments include:

  • Defending the owner of a $12 million commercial property against an ownership challenge and securing a $3.5 million counterclaim judgment.
  • Recovering millions for clients defrauded in the sale of high-value life insurance policies and premium finance scams.
  • Defending heirs in a post-death dispute over valuable real estate, vindicating their rights and family reputation, and obtaining a complete defense verdict after trial.
  • Securing $2.3 million on behalf of a high-profile public figure in a fraudulent entertainment venture.
  • Obtaining injunctions and judgments in trademark, real estate, and broker commission disputes.
  • Obtaining $5 million jury verdict and judgment against high profile defendant in personal injury claim.
  • Regularly resolving important high-stakes business disputes and thus avoiding the uncertainty and expense of trial.

Business and Real Estate Counsel

In addition to litigation, Jonathan advises clients on:

  • Commercial real estate purchases, sales, and financing
  • Business formation, governance, and operations
  • Commercial leasing
  • Corporate transactions and business financings
  • Escrow services

His clients include or have included real estate developers, business owners, brokers, lenders, publicly traded companies, finance companies, entertainment ventures, branding and PR firms, internet and social media companies, as well as high-net-worth individuals, celebrities and public figures.

Background and Leadership

After clerking for the Honorable Ralph W. Nimmons of the Florida First District Court of Appeal, Jonathan moved to California where he began his career in-house with New Line Cinema and Trump Wilshire Associates. As in-house counsel, he negotiated complex real estate and entertainment transactions. He thereafter went into private practice, eventually joining his present partners who have all worked together for more than twenty years.

Jonathan earned his B.A., cum laude, from the University of South Florida in 1981, and his J.D., with honors, from the University of Florida College of Law in 1985, where he served on law review.

Bank Accused of Manufacturing Defaults to Force Refinancing of $35+ Million Hotel Loan Portfolio
Quantum Law Group represents a family-owned portfolio of hotel operators in a lender liability action arising from a $35+ million commercial loan relationship with a regional bank. Despite decades of timely payments and significant over-collateralization, the bank retroactively declared non-monetary defaults following the death of the principal guarantor and during the COVID-19 recovery period. Discovery has revealed internal bank communications acknowledging no anticipated credit loss and reflecting a strategy to place the loan in retroactive default to increase the interest rate and sell the portfolio at near-par value. The clients were forced to refinance under severe time constraints with a pending default, resulting in more than $6 million in additional interest, fees, and credit harm. The firm is prosecuting claims for breach of contract, breach of the covenant of good faith and fair dealing, and other causes of action.

Lenox v. Miller, Los Angeles Superior Court
Quantum Law Group LLP obtained a jury verdict of over $5,069,001 in a case where Plaintiff was seriously injured when defendant struck him in a private drive at a facility in which Plaintiff was head of security. Defendant contended he was threatened by plaintiff and fleeing for his life. Based upon video, direct testimony of both Plaintiff and Defendant, and other evidence, Plaintiff demonstrated to the jury that Defendant acted recklessly and with malice when he accelerated his Porsche at full speed in the direction of Plaintiff, struck him, and fled the scene. The jury found Defendant acted with malice.

Vita Property Management Group, LLC, et al v. Flatt, Weiss, Mass Mutual, et al., Tennessee Circuit Court for Franklin County
Plaintiffs filed a complaint alleging that defendants conspired in a scheme to defraud plaintiffs in a sophisticated premium financed life insurance scheme which trapped plaintiffs in expensive and unaffordable life insurance through improper premium financing which was misrepresented. Defendants filed an answer denying any wrongdoing. The case was resolved by all parties in a confidential settlement without requiring trial.

Kacker v. Lincoln National Life Insurance, transferred to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania
The Firm brough a claim on behalf of widow of insured seeking benefits under life insurance policy. Insured surrendered his life insurance policy while fatally ill upon receiving notice of substantial premium increase. Plaintiff contended the increase was based upon an illegal increase in cost of insurance and that the surrender was based upon confusion. Defendant denied all allegations. The case was resolved by all parties in a confidential settlement without requiring trial.

Julian adv. Stonecipher, Los Angeles County Superior Court
